This beautiful town is located at the southernmost point of Liechtenstein and sits right on the Rhine River, across from Switzerland.
Travel time is 4 hours (return trip) plus add extra time figuring out platforms and directions. Most cities have a welcome sign.
Even if you dont want to go inside the castle premises, you can visit the grounds to get a beautiful view of southern Liechtenstein. Surrounded by rolling hills of Switzerland and pretty views and greenery, this village was a delightful stop along the way to Vaduz.

Who knew? Of course, the easiest option for getting around Liechtenstein is having your own car, so you can drive everywhere without having to rely on public transport. Schloss Vaduz or the Vaduz Castle is the official residence of the Prince of Liechtenstein. one way.
Triesenberg is less than a 10-minute drive from Vaduz or a 20-minute drive if you are coming from Planken (you need to drive through Vaduz to reach Triesenberg). On the way into Vaduz or way out, you will see a pretty castle in the faraway distance.
But despite its size, Liechtenstein manages to pack in fairytale castles, unforgettable alpine vistas, and picturesque mountain villages. Another interesting museum is the Postmuseum which contains a collection of postage stamps, letters, and other paraphernalia from all around the world.
Once you are at the Schans-Vaduz train station, you can take a bus or taxi to Vaduz (in 15-20 minutes). From Sargans, there are bright yellow-colored buses available for Vaduz Post bus stop. Situated in the charismatic village of Steg, Stausee Steg is a gorgeous alpine lake in a vibrant turquoise hue. Although we took this tour, research is important so that you can hit the city highlights in a short period of time and decide what to explore and what to miss.

For the price of the tour, you are essentially paying for transport and sightseeing in Switzerland (Rapperswil and Heidiland) and drive to Liechtenstein. If you searched for Liechtenstein fun facts, you are at the right spot. 11 (destination: Feldkirch) or 12E (destination: Vaduz) it will take around 25 minutes to reach Vaduz with both. There is no direct bus from Malbun to Balzers but you can take the 11, 13, or 12E from Vaduz town.

On to Vaduz, Liechtenstein's capital city! Balzers is the final town I recommend you make room for in your Zurich to Liechtenstein day trip.
There are both direct trains and transfer routes available. Alternatively, you can take the 11, 12, or 13 bus to Bahnhof and then transfer to the number 26 bus.

If you search for a Zurich to Vaduz train or a Zurich to Balzers train in Google Maps, you'll find that the train line ends at Sargans Switzerland right at the Liechtenstein border.


A fun activity to fit into your one day in Liechtenstein is a whirl on the Vaduz Citytrain. July and August are the hottest months with average daytime temperatures of 18-20C (65-68F).
