To enable host transport controls, open the Controller Editor application.
Select your MIDI input for the device you wish to control the Ableton Live transport with.
I see your tutorial is for the Mikro and I followed the same procedure for Maschine but the pads did not change colors. If the MIDI port list does not automatically populate, click the elektron logo to refresh the list (this will deselect any ports you have already selected).
Also, I had a quetsion about pad colors within Maschine.
Ableton can be a little controlling at times too. This is just one of the infinite ways you can use Transport Control with low-cost MIDI hardware to bring a new level of customization to how you us Live.
Tested with Octatrack and Analog Rytm MKII.
I will be doing a video showing how to install it and also one showing how it works with Live 9, but the concept is the same for Live 8.
Transport Control offers full playback control while adding new controls for pause, fast forward/rewind, and loop start/end punch.
You can sync live to the keybaord if you want (in midi setup; select KS37 input sync; and slave it to the keyboard in the upper left corner when done).

Restart turns looping on and off and Erase acts as a stop button. I mean it basically just allows you to control the transport of Ableton while in regular Maschine mode.

Ableton Lives transport doesnt respond to MIDI Start, Stop, and Continue messages (which is what Elektron devices send).

In Ableton Live open go into the Preferences and go to the MIDI Sync tab.
With the Host Transport Controls enabled, the play, erase, restart, and step left/right buttons will affect the DAW instead of Maschine. Maschine comes in three flavors Maschine MK2, Maschine Mikro MK2, and iMaschine and is a combination of hardware and software. Make sure youve enabled host transport control in the actual mackie templae. Only when OB offered to do that over USB it became interesting to me.
It all helps anything to help refine the workflow.

The appeal of OB for me is that recordings are perfectly synced to abletons timeline. I only use OB as a controller and for total recall.

I followed your Ableton workflow 2.1 and have that working PERFECTLY, with an external instrument each connected to a group from maschine. A custom designed MIDI mapping system also allows quick mapping of any MIDI hardware key or pad to any toolbar button with just a click and a press.
This is only when using OB. Try loading your OB plugin and pressing play on your Elektron Device with Ableton as Master Clock. Just tested this with the new Digitone and Digitakt updates and its working for those devices now too.
You should be able to use multiple devices to control the transport by dropping multiple Elektron Transporter devices in your project and selecting the corresponding MIDI inputs (untested).
When using in Windows, Elektron Transporter cannot use any port that the host application (Ableton Live) is also using. It makes Ableton Live respond to those messages.
Dedicated buttons for Looping, Cue Points, and Quantize are organized in a compact area for quick access.
Thats what I have listed Transport buttons doing nothing , You either need to have Maschine plugin loaded or you need to have Maschine in MIDI mode.
Previously the clock had to be sent with the transport controls from the Digitakt and Digitone.

Just tried with AR2 MIDI over USB (not OB). Joe, I think the issue is that in ableton, the control surface preference needs to say MAschine Mk2 Virtual Input for the input and Maschine MK2 Virtual Output for Output. To remedy this problem, Native Instruments implemented the host transport controls feature.
I have Ableton 9 if that makes a difference, and under control surfaces, I have MackieControl but for input, I only see Maschine Controller Mk2. Set your Elektron device to send transport controls.

Yeah it depends on your workflow.
Drop on a track anywhere in your Live project. By using this feature, the Maschine controller will send MIDI to your DAW when you use the transport controls while all of the other buttons and knobs will continue to affect the Maschine VST.
And so on. That was the missing link. Ive been still using Megatroids incredible MEGAMaschine template when using Maschine as a controller for Ableton (http://megatroid.com/2012/05/megamaschine-version-2-release/) and obviously its controls for Live are far more comprehensive.

Ableton responds just fine to these here. I get frustrated every time when ending an OB recording take and nothing happens when I hit stop on the AR. Althought I'd stay away from using ableton live as a slave when recording anything because the tempo will make tiny adjustements and your recording will be warped to it; it's a whole mess; best to sync the keyboard to live.

I did everything in the tutorial but access any of my content within Maschine. In your MIDI Sync preferences you can choose your control surfaces. It doesnt for me unless Im sending clock to Ableton from the Elektron Device.

Add a new level of control to Ableton Live with Transport Control. In the template section choose Mackie Control.
This way you will use that Elektron device as the transport controller for itself, Ableton Live, and any other Overbridge devices that are set to Transport + Clock. To be able to control the transport when Ableton is master. As for the pad colors, that only works on the new mk2 controllers not the originals. This is what they have to say about it Transport Control is a Max for Live device that adds two floating toolbars to Ableton Live.
I m missing something i think. I just tried it and its working. When using Maschine as a VST in a DAW like Ableton Live, the transport controls on the Maschine controller become inactive.
In that case youd just set the OB plugin sync to clock and control the Ableton transport from your Elektron. Enable transport send and disable clock send on your Digitakt or Digitone after updating to the newest firmwares.

You would just make sure to set it up as a control surface using mackie control and youll be good. This site uses Akismet to reduce spam. To get rid of the OB latency, I mute the OB plugin channel and turn off latency compensation in Ableton Live.
But, I followed THIS tutorial to a T, loaded that template, and the transport controls did nothing not only record, but any of them ?!
For example in Ableton Live, Play works as both a play and restart button. for example, shift+play on maschine to turn abletons metronome on/off.
In this case you only turn off transport and not the clock.
Hello, I'm trying to use this with ableton and so far everything works but the transport ist working as expected. In my case I set OB to no sync and use the Multiclock to lock everything together. Im also using an ERM Multiclock as my clock.

It was a quick free device I made in response to someone asking how they could control the Ableton Transport from their Elektron gear.

What is the equivalent of Remote in Studio one SJ? The downside (for now) is that pressing play with Ableton wont start your Elektron transport.
