Amazon US, It's clear that the Obscura had a very specific design brief and I'm reviewing it on that basis, rather than what it might have been. The Harman Titan I reviewed previously uses standard 5x4 filmholders, so you can take as many of these as you want on your day out. The camera itself is well built, for the ~$100 price tag. The bag then needs to be opened up and the film box replaced with the fresh film box, so it is quite a palaver and really needs a spring-up changing tent as shown in the photos rather than a changing bag. did you use any developer/printing that favors warm tones ? sorry for all these questions. The Obscura accepts either 4x5sheet film or photo paper.
Wow! The 0.3mm chemically-etched pinhole provides an approximate aperture of f/290 and a magnetic locking shutter allows for controlled exposures. It has a tripod socket in the base but no spirit level, although it would be easy enough to sit a small spirit level on the flat surface of the camera.
Once it comes to using it though, the choice is between a single shot or carrying a changing tent and box of film with you, so I found that to be really limiting and it substantially reduced the fun factor for me. Its been a nice evening activity, leaving the office and heading out to shoot a sheet or two.
The question is whether that just makes it old-fashioned, or if it is actually funky in a retro way? The OBSCURAkit comes with, the OBSCURA camera, a simple exposure calculator for use without a light meter, a set of stickers, a user instruction booklet and a 3-tray light-tight sheet film box for storing exposed materials. The other thing to be aware of is a scientific effect known as reciprocity law failure which means you have to give considerably more exposure to the film once the speed goes beyond second.
Verdict
how is it developed ? A camera is often referred to as a light-tight box and a quick look at the Obscura will tell you that it is very much from the box school of design.
I started my masters here in January, all these photos were processed in UWs darkroom. I have made my own large format cameras, and shot paper negatives to test them. The shutter rotates either clockwise or counter-clockwise for right or left-handed operation and a tripod bushing is incorporated into the camera body for use with any standard tripod. The box is in 2 sections with the front part sliding into the back part as a very tight fit and this effectively seals the camera against light entry, plus the 2 sections are held firmly together with neat magnets on the sides which meet up almost without you noticing. Vat: GB145 1939 60, Pinhole camera for 4x5 film or photographic paper, 87mm focal length giving wide angle images. NB If you are unfamiliar with 5x4 film, you can get some info in my earlier review of the Harman Titan camera.

My testing was limited to Ilford 100 Delta film, so my comments are restricted to that. Framing isnt too bad either, just use a level and remember the focal length is a full frame equivalent of pretty dang wide, about 24mm. Your privacy is important to us! The pinhole is covered by an intriguingly shaped device held closed by another 2 magnets, and this is simply swung open to take the shot and then swung back at the end of the exposure. Uniquely, it employs magnets to keep the shutter cover in position (either open or closed).
Pinhole photography means exposure times way beyond the handholding stage and a support of sorts is essential.
Next steps for me are shooting some film, I have a pack of Portra 160 and the Delta 100 that came with the camera staring at me right now. We transform the way that people buy, sell and trade in photo and video kit. Its a hugely enjoyable experience, from start to finish. Ive used my Obscura quite a bit over the past few years with film and I have liked the results. I set out to enjoy myself with a photographic process. Also included in this kit is a simple exposure calculator, a set of stickers to decorate the camera, and a 3-tray light-tight box for your exposed film and paper. I havent gotten too fancy with printing in general, just been using Ilford Multigrade, the paper is pretty neutral, definitely not cool. Whether they would win any awards is a moot point, as I did not set out to win any awards. You wouldnt want to toss it in a bag with some big text books, but at the same time it feels sturdy whenever you use it. Filters can be held over the pinhole for the duration of the exposure and a neutral density one could well come in handy on a sunny day when exposure times can get uncomfortably short. Having to take a changing tent and box of film is a major drawback Aside from the novelty, IMO it is a pointless exercise in a technology that predates Jos. Nice job with these. They do make an 810 version that might be a bit cheaper if you cut it up yourself.
